When Core Values Are Strategic: How the Basic Values of Procter & Gamble Transformed Leadership at Fortune 500 CompaniesOne of the side effects of buying books on Amazon these days is that you often buy them based on titles, and don’t get the chance to look through them.  For sure, Amazon has a search device that allows you to go through the book, but this is actually quite slow and difficult to deal with, so personally I don’t bother.  The result of this is that you sometime end up buying books that you wouldn’t necessarily have bought, had you seen it in a bookstore.  This is one case in question.  This is not necessarily a bad thing, as it will sometimes give you a different perspective and challenge you to read in different ways.

BOOK REVIEW: “The Art of Choosing” by Sheena Iyengar (2010)

The Art of ChoosingIn a magazine interview, Catherine Zeta-Jones, the Welsh actress and wife of Michael Douglas, describes one of her daily chores, which involve making choices. 

It is,” she said, “deciding whether to buy that beautiful little dress she had found while shopping in California, knowing full well that the shoes you need to go with it were in one of your homes in the Caribbean or Europe.”  

Pity the rich and famous!

We have more choices today than we have ever had in history and yet making countless decisions each day may be a burden rather than a pleasure.  In this excellent book, which brings in scientific research and personal examples, Dr. Sheena Iyengar, Professor at Columbia University, describes just why some of these choices are so difficult.

Brian Leavy and Peter McKiernanStrategic Leadership: Governance & Renewal is advanced reading for students of strategy. The book is particularly strong in the explanation of the resource based view of strategy, innovation and the problems of aligning strategy between the differing business units and the corporation at large.
